Now, enough of the third person jargon.
Let's get real.
I grew up on the South-Side of Chicago. While I love my city, I was exposed to it's raw underbelly at a very young age. This keeps me grounded and grateful. I am still sorting through my role as an artist, a woman, a leader and an entrepreneur. I feel the tension of my blue-collar roots, my feminist views, my social justice spirit and my artist life style on a daily basis. All themes that pop up in my work.
While my career path brought me travel, celebrities, parties and awards; the things I am most proud of are the relationships and the skills I have built along the way. I have chosen Chicago to continue to be my home. I am interested in social justice, travel, cultures and others who dance the dance of art of business.
I often get questions like "What do you really do?" or when introduced to others they say "Melissa is an awesome photographer," but forget to mention the long list of other talents and career paths I pursue. The long and short is I am a diversified community storyteller. I use filmmaking, writing, photography and watercolor as my medium. As a classically trained artist I can sketch my own storyboards. I have a minor in English narrative writing and Art History. I am an award winning screen writer. I am a science fiction geek who consumes large quantities of sci-fi and fantasy novels. I have worked with some of the top creative agencies, luxury brands and production houses in my career playing various roles. I have been creating award-winning documentary films for clients for over a decade. I have over 20 years of experience editing films ranging from short form commercial work to feature length documentaries. I am most interested in creating work that has social justice impact. I want my work to bring equality, give voice to those who need it and change the perspectives of others toward creating a more unified community. I do this by working with companies and non-profits on a local level. I want my work to combat stereotypes and narratives toward that vision of equity. I bring an open mind to every set I step into.
To that end, my work in both not-for-profit and for-profit companies has a proven history of reaching and motivating behavior change in audiences as diverse as the general public. My experience is vast and takes me from producing and directing social-issue and arts & culture documentaries to content-centric marketing campaigns and corporate filmmaking. I have built and managed diverse creative teams from the ground up in both the motion picture industry as well as in writing, directing, photography, marketing and art direction.
The world loves being able to put people into one simple title. For me, it's not so simple. My work in one area feeds my work in another. So while I may be managing a workflow one day and directing a film the next, to me it's all along the same goal of finding meaningful work that feeds my soul and pays the bills.
What a delicate dance that is!
Here you will find a collection of my work, art, writing and travels. I am curating a virtual art show online for you to peruse and purchase a print, canvas or metal print. Sign up to be the first to see it!
